Chapter 6 - Project Hearth

Project Hearth sounded harmless.

It wasn’t.

The files Richard eventually surrendered revealed a long-running blackmail system.

Executives.

Judges.

Contractors.

Investigators.

Harrow collected vulnerabilities and used family members as leverage.

Children were rarely physically harmed.

Usually they didn’t need to be.

A photograph outside a school was enough.

A copied medical record.

A schedule.

A message demonstrating that Harrow knew where someone’s family slept.

My stomach turned as I read.

Marcus closed the folder.

“You shut down the original operation before they could expand this.”

“And Andrew rebuilt it.”

“Yes.”

“Using Richard’s money.”

“Yes.”

“Why Toby?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Because Andrew thinks you still have something.”

“What?”

“The Harrow ledger.”

I stared at him.

“I destroyed it.”

“That’s what we thought.”

Then I remembered.

Fifteen years earlier, before the final raid, I had made an encrypted backup.

Protocol required it.

After the investigation, I surrendered the drive.

Or believed I had.

“Where would it be?”

Marcus shrugged.

“That’s the problem.”

That evening, Isabelle brought me a small wooden box.

“I found this after we married.”

Inside was an old watch.

My father’s watch.

I stared at it.

“Where?”

“In a storage box you brought from your old apartment.”

I picked it up.

Too heavy.

I opened the back.

Inside was a tiny storage wafer.

Suddenly fifteen years disappeared.

I remembered hiding it.

The night Andrew told me our internal systems might be compromised.

The irony almost made me sick.

Andrew himself had been the compromise.

The ledger had been with me the entire time.

Marcus stared at the wafer.

“If that’s intact…”

“It ends Harrow.”

It also made me a target.

We turned it over to federal investigators immediately.

No secret copy.

No personal leverage.

No revenge.

By midnight, warrants were being prepared across three states.

But Andrew Vale had one move left.

At 12:42 a.m., Saint Luke lost power.

Backup generators activated within seconds.

Emergency lights turned red.

I stood instantly.

Toby was asleep.

Security alarms began sounding.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Andrew’s voice.

“You always were predictable.”

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

I looked toward the door.

Hospital security locked the unit.

“You won’t reach him.”

Andrew laughed.

“I don’t need to.”

A second later, Isabelle screamed from the hallway.

I ran out.

She stood staring at her phone.

On the screen was live video.

Our house.

Someone was inside Toby’s bedroom.

Searching.

Andrew wasn’t coming for Toby.

He was looking for the ledger.

And he didn’t know we had already surrendered it.

That meant something important.

For the first time, Andrew Vale was behind us.

He was acting on bad information.
