Chapter 16 - The Promise I Almost Broke

Andrew’s trial came next.
Then Jasper’s sentencing.
Then Kyle’s.
Months passed.
Life slowly became measured in ordinary things again.
Homework.
Soccer.
Groceries.
Therapy appointments.
Toby’s first full night without a nightmare.
Isabelle and I struggled.
Trust does not magically return because the villain goes to prison.
She had hidden threats from me.
I had hidden an entire career from her.
We had both believed secrecy protected our family.
Instead, secrecy had given fear room to grow.
One evening, Isabelle asked, “Do you still love me?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
She deserved more than an automatic yes.
“I do.”
She cried.
“But love isn’t enough,” I continued.
“I know.”
“We rebuild honestly or we don’t rebuild.”
She nodded.
So we started again.
Not as the couple we had been.
As the people we actually were.
Months later, I received an offer to return to federal service.
Marcus expected me to accept.
The old Daniel wanted to.
Then Toby came downstairs carrying his soccer cleats.
“Practice?”
I looked at the offer letter.
Then at him.
“Practice.”
I declined the position.
But I didn’t abandon the work entirely.
I began consulting on child-protection investigations and financial coercion cases.
No secret deployments.
No disappearing for weeks.
No encrypted life my family couldn’t understand.
I had once believed protecting people meant standing between them and danger.
Toby taught me something better.
May you like
Sometimes protecting people means being present after the danger is gone.
