Chapter 5 - The Husband Who Came Looking

Philip arrived at Adrian's gates at midnight.

He came alone.

That made him more dangerous, not less.

The security cameras caught his car before he reached the property.

Adrian's men moved immediately.

Ellie woke to voices downstairs.

She put on a robe and stepped into the hallway.

Adrian was already there.

“Go back inside.”

The words came automatically.

Ellie's expression changed.

Adrian caught himself.

“Sorry.”

She folded her arms.

“Try again.”

“Philip is outside. I think staying upstairs would be safer.”

“Better.”

“You're still coming downstairs.”

“Yes.”

“I assumed so.”

At the front gate, Philip shouted into the intercom.

“I want my wife!”

Ellie pressed the speaker.

“You don't have a wife anymore.”

Silence.

Then:

“Ellie?”

“Yes.”

“Come home.”

“No.”

“This has gone far enough.”

“For you.”

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

The word felt extraordinary.

Philip began pounding the gate.

“You think Moretti is protecting you?”

Ellie looked at Adrian.

He stood several feet away.

Not controlling the conversation.

Not interrupting.

Just present.

Philip continued.

“He's using you!”

“Then I'll deal with that if it happens.”

“You can't survive without me.”

Ellie almost laughed.

She had believed that for years.

Tonight it sounded absurd.

“I survived you.”

Philip stopped pounding.

Ellie leaned toward the intercom.

“And that's the part you never planned for.”

She disconnected.

Philip remained outside for another twenty minutes.

Then police arrived.

By morning, a judge had approved an emergency protective order.

Philip wasn't supposed to contact her.

He violated it six hours later.

An email arrived.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'VE DONE.

Ellie forwarded it to Morales.

Then another.

VICTOR KNOWS YOU SAW HIM.

Adrian read that one.

“This isn't just intimidation.”

“What is it?”

“A warning.”

Ellie stared at the screen.

“Maybe Philip's afraid of Victor too.”

Adrian considered it.

That possibility changed everything.

Philip might be violent.

But Victor Dane had millions of dollars and years of criminal exposure to protect.

If Philip was losing control of Ellie, Victor might decide Philip was a liability.

And Ellie was evidence.

The police began tracing the financial records from the memory card.

Accounts connected Philip's consulting company to three shell corporations.

But the most important evidence remained missing.

The original ledger.

Caroline Webb, the missing accountant, had apparently created one.

Nobody knew where it was.

That evening, Ellie opened her laptop.

She searched old photographs from the gala.

Then stopped.

“Adrian.”

He entered the study.

She enlarged an image.

Caroline Webb stood in the background.

Red dress.

Blonde hair.

Watching Philip.

But Caroline wasn't looking at Philip.

She was looking at Ellie.

“What if she wanted me to see something?”

Adrian leaned closer.

Ellie moved to another photograph.

Caroline stood beside a coat-check counter.

Another.

She was gone.

Another.

Ellie was holding Philip's jacket.

And behind her, almost invisible, Caroline was slipping something into the pocket.

The envelope.

Ellie looked at Adrian.

“She put it there.”

“So Philip wasn't supposed to have it.”

“No.”

“Who was?”

Ellie's pulse accelerated.

“Me.”

Silence.

Caroline Webb had chosen Ellie.

Six months before disappearing, she had tried to pass evidence to Philip Hughes's wife.

The envelope had never reached Ellie.

But perhaps something else had.

Ellie searched her belongings.

Her gala clutch.

Nothing.

Then she remembered Caroline brushing against her near the restroom.

“Excuse me,” the woman had said.

Ellie had thought nothing of it.

She opened the small inner pocket of the clutch.

Her fingers touched paper.

A coat-check ticket.

Number 317.

On the back were four handwritten words.

Union Station. Locker 317.

Adrian stared.

“How long has that been there?”

“I don't know.”

“Ellie, don't touch anything else.”

She laughed nervously.

“I think we're past that.”

Detective Morales arrived.

The ticket was documented.

A warrant followed.

At Union Station, locker 317 was opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

The box contained copies of financial ledgers.

Photographs.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten letter.

It began:

If Ellie Hughes is reading this, I was right about her husband.

Ellie's knees weakened.

Morales continued reading.

Caroline described everything.

Victor's laundering network.

Philip's involvement.

Payments disguised as consulting fees.

Threats.

And finally:

Philip is dangerous when he's afraid. Victor is dangerous when he's calm. If this reaches you, Ellie, don't confront either of them. Take it to someone they cannot buy.

Ellie looked toward Adrian.

Caroline had disappeared before she could finish what she started.

But she had left behind enough evidence to reopen the investigation.

Enough to make Victor nervous.

Enough to make Philip desperate.

That night, another message arrived.

Not from Philip.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Ellie sleeping in the hospital.

Taken through the window in her room.

Beneath it were six words:

MORETTI CANNOT WATCH YOU FOREVER.

Adrian's face became stone.

Ellie stared at the image.

Someone had gotten close enough to photograph her.

Someone had been watching since the hospital.

May you like

And whoever it was had just announced that the real danger was no longer waiting outside Adrian's gates.

It might already be inside.
