Chapter 18 - A Life Ellie Chose for Herself

Ellie refused a giant wedding.

Adrian looked relieved.

Rosa looked offended.

“What is wrong with giant weddings?”

“Nothing.”

“Then giant.”

“No.”

“Medium giant.”

“No.”

They compromised.

Forty guests.

A garden.

Caroline attended under security arrangements.

Morales came with her wife.

Rosa cried before anyone else.

Ellie chose her own dress.

That mattered.

The designer asked:

“What silhouette makes you feel most beautiful?”

Ellie almost cried in the fitting room.

Not:

What makes you look thinner?

Not:

What hides your body?

What makes you feel beautiful?

She chose an elegant ivory gown fitted to her natural curves.

She looked in the mirror.

For years Philip's voice had lived there.

Too much.

Too visible.

Too ambitious.

Now Ellie smiled.

“That's the one.”

On the wedding morning, rain threatened.

Rosa panicked.

Ellie didn't.

“Let it rain.”

The ceremony began beneath gray clouds.

Adrian waited.

When Ellie appeared, his expression broke completely.

She walked toward him alone.

Not because nobody could give her away.

Because nobody owned her to give.

When she reached Adrian, he whispered:

“You're beautiful.”

“I know.”

He laughed.

Their vows were simple.

No obedience.

No possession.

No promises that erased individuality.

Adrian promised honesty.

Ellie promised honesty.

Both promised to leave room for the other person's no.

Then rain began.

Softly.

Guests rushed beneath the canopy.

Ellie stayed.

Adrian looked upward.

“You planned this?”

“Obviously.”

“You control weather now?”

“I've expanded.”

They kissed beneath the rain.

Later, Ellie stood alone for a moment.

She remembered another black dress.

Another storm.

Another man.

Another version of herself lying on asphalt and believing her life might be over.

If she could speak to that woman now, Ellie knew exactly what she would say.

Not:

A powerful man is coming to save you.

Not:

Everything will become easy.

She would say:

Stay awake.

Help is coming, but the life afterward will belong to you.

Adrian approached.

“Ready?”

“For what?”

“Our first dance.”

“I warned you I can't dance.”

“I've seen you dance.”

“Exactly.”

Ellie laughed.

They joined their friends.

The rain passed.

Stars appeared.

May you like

And for once, there was no cliffhanger waiting at the edge of happiness.

Only tomorrow.
