Chapter 13 - Philip’s Last Threat

The night before trial, Philip sent one final message through his attorney.

He wanted to plead guilty.

Ellie read the proposed agreement.

Financial crimes.

Assault.

Witness intimidation.

Other charges.

Years in prison.

No trial.

No public cross-examination.

Morales asked how she felt.

“Relieved.”

Then Ellie surprised herself.

“And angry.”

“Why?”

“Because part of me wanted him to hear me testify.”

Morales nodded.

“You can still give a victim-impact statement at sentencing.”

Ellie thought about it.

“Yes.”

Philip entered his plea.

He admitted pushing Ellie from the car.

The words appeared in the court record.

For years he had told her she exaggerated.

Imagined.

Provoked.

Now the truth existed somewhere he couldn't rewrite it.

After court, reporters surrounded Ellie.

She made one statement.

“Today isn't about revenge. It's about accountability. What happened to me was real. What happens next is my life.”

Then she left.

Philip's final threat wasn't spoken.

It came in a box returned with her belongings.

Inside was their wedding album.

Every photograph had been removed except one.

Ellie standing alone before the ceremony.

On the back Philip had written years earlier:

Mine.

Ellie stared.

Then tore the photograph free.

She crossed out the word.

Under it she wrote:

Mine.

She framed the photograph.

Not because she wanted to remember Philip.

Because she wanted to remember herself before him.

Adrian saw it later.

“That's new.”

“Yes.”

He read the back.

Then smiled.

“Good correction.”

Ellie turned toward him.

“I love you.”

Adrian froze.

For once, the feared Adrian Moretti had absolutely nothing to say.

Ellie laughed.

“You look terrified.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because I love you too.”

She stopped laughing.

Neither moved for several seconds.

Then Adrian approached slowly.

“Can I?”

Ellie smiled.

“Yes.”

He kissed her.

And for the first time, love didn't feel like surrender.

But the story wasn't finished.

May you like

Because sentencing was approaching.

And Ellie had one last thing to say to Philip Hughes.
