Chapter 11 - The Offer

Richard offered Chloe two million dollars.
She recorded the conversation.
Her attorney turned the recording over through proper channels.
The content did not magically resolve every question, but it undermined Richard’s claim that he had merely been a passive investor.
Meanwhile, the forensic review established something equally important.
Luca had hidden financial distress.
He had approved undisclosed related-party arrangements.
But not every suspicious transfer had gone into his pocket.
Much of the money had been used to cover failing projects.
That distinction mattered to me.
Truth mattered more than revenge.
I would not turn Luca into something worse simply because he had betrayed me.
When I visited him, he looked older.
“Why are you here?”
“To ask one question.”
“What?”
“Why didn’t you tell me the company was in trouble?”
He laughed sadly.
“Because you would have fixed it.”
I stared at him.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does when you’ve spent ten years telling everyone you’re the reason the company succeeds.”
There it was.
Not money.
Not Chloe.
Not even power.
Shame.
Luca would rather risk everything than admit he needed the wife whose contribution he had spent years minimizing.
“I would have helped you.”
“I know.”
“That’s the tragedy, Luca.”
He looked away.
Before I left, he told me where the original Northstar agreements were stored.
They proved Richard had demanded increasingly aggressive control rights.
And they gave us leverage to negotiate our company out of the trap.
For once, Luca had told me the complete truth.

It came years too late for our marriage.
But perhaps not too late for everyone else.
