Chapter 16 - What Luca Lost

Luca avoided criminal accusations that could not be supported, but he did not avoid consequences.

Civil disputes followed.

His reputation changed.

His authority vanished.

Several transactions required settlements and corrective action.

Most painfully for him, Vance Capital moved forward without him.

But Luca did something I hadn’t expected.

He stopped fighting reality.

He cooperated.

He accepted responsibility where the evidence supported it.

He began consulting for small companies far from the world where his name once opened every door.

Evelyn thought I was too generous when I said I hoped he succeeded.

I disagreed.

Wanting someone to heal is not the same as inviting them back.

By then, my divorce was final.

The decree arrived on a Tuesday.

I expected fireworks inside my chest.

Instead, I felt quiet.

I went home early.

I walked barefoot through the villa.

The same staircase.

The same fireplace.

The same lake.

But no tension waited behind any door.

I opened the windows.

Cold air swept through the room.

For years I had thought freedom would feel dramatic.

It didn’t.

It felt like being able to breathe without wondering who would punish me for taking up space.

Then my phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

“I have something that belongs to you.”

“What?”

“Your mother’s final trust file.”

“I thought I had everything.”

“So did I.”

Inside it was one last surprise.

May you like

Not money.

Something far more valuable.
