Chapter 5 - The Office He Couldn’t Enter

We returned to the villa before sunset.

Luca was gone.

The second man was not an employee I recognized.

Security footage showed him carrying a slim computer bag and trying three access cards against my office door.

They failed.

My office had been rekeyed six weeks earlier.

Luca hadn’t known.

Inside that office were the original trust records, shareholder agreements, and copies of correspondence my mother had preserved years before.

Luca wanted something.

The question was what.

Evelyn found the answer in an old shareholder agreement.

When Vance Capital was founded, my initial contribution had been made through the Mercer-Vance Family Trust. Luca contributed relationships, a smaller amount of capital, and operational work.

Over time, we had reorganized repeatedly.

But one provision had survived.

Certain extraordinary transactions required approval from a special class of founder shares.

Mine.

The restructuring document Luca wanted me to sign would have neutralized those rights.

Suddenly, his twenty-minute ultimatum made sense.

The divorce was real.

The mistress was real.

But the urgency had never been about marriage.

It was about control.

At 8:14 p.m., Evelyn received the completed preliminary audit.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

She removed her glasses.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Jessica, Vance Capital has a liquidity problem.”

“How bad?”

“If these numbers are accurate, severe.”

Luca had borrowed against projects, accelerated obligations, and shifted funds through related entities.

The company looked wealthy.

But appearance and cash were different things.

Thousands of employees, contractors, investors, and families depended on projects we had built.

My anger disappeared.

This was no longer about Luca humiliating me.

If the company collapsed, innocent people would pay.

I closed the divorce folder.

“Forget the marriage for tonight.”

Evelyn studied me.

“What are you thinking?”

“I’m thinking about Monday payroll.”

That was when I decided Luca could lose me.

He could lose the villa.

He could lose his title.

But I would not let him burn down fourteen years of work simply because he had been reckless enough to believe nobody was watching.

Tomorrow morning, I would walk into the boardroom.

And this time, Luca wouldn’t be sitting at the head of the table alone.
