Chapter 11 - My Father's Apology

Dad came to my office alone.
No Mom.
No Hailey.
He looked older.
He placed a folder on my desk.
"I failed you."
I didn't answer.
"I kept telling myself you were stronger."
"That's convenient."
"I know."
He swallowed.
"We protected Hailey because she struggled. And every time we protected her, we asked you to absorb the consequences."
That was the first time either parent had described the pattern accurately.
Dad slid the folder toward me.
Inside were emails Trevor had sent him.
Requests for introductions.
Financial questions.
Questions about my company.
One email stood out.
Does Claire keep original corporate certificates at home or office?
Dad had answered:
Probably office. Why?
Trevor replied:
Insurance audit.
My father looked sick.
"I gave him information."
"Yes."
"I'm sorry."
I believed he was.
That didn't erase anything.
"I'm not ready to forgive you."
He nodded.
"I understand."
That mattered.
No guilt.
No demand.
No "family."
Just acceptance.
As Dad stood to leave, he paused.
"Claire?"
"What?"
"Your grandmother used to say something about you."
I waited.
"She said you were the only person in the family who knew the difference between being generous and being weak."
My throat tightened.
Dad left.
I sat alone for a long time.
Then Evelyn called.
"Trevor's attorney wants another meeting."
"Why?"
"He wants to cooperate."
"With whom?"
May you like
"Everyone."
Trevor had finally realized the people around him weren't going down to save him.
