Chapter 18 - The Empty House

Two years after Trevor sent the photograph, I woke before sunrise.

I walked downstairs barefoot.

The mansion was silent.

I made coffee.

Opened the terrace doors.

Pacific light spread across the horizon.

Trevor had told me to enjoy living alone in my empty house.

He had meant it as punishment.

He never understood that solitude and abandonment were different things.

My house wasn't empty anymore.

Not because someone had replaced Trevor.

Nobody had.

It was full of things I had forgotten while managing his chaos.

Books.

Music.

Friends.

Work I loved.

Quiet mornings.

Dinner parties.

My own thoughts.

Eventually, perhaps, love again.

But I wasn't waiting for another person to make the rooms meaningful.

My phone buzzed.

Hailey.

A photograph.

She was standing inside a tiny apartment surrounded by moving boxes.

Caption:

First place that's actually mine.

I smiled.

Then replied:

Proud of you.

Three dots appeared.

Her response:

Thanks, Claire.

No request for money.

No emergency.

No manipulation.

May you like

Just thanks.

Sometimes the smallest changes are the biggest ones.
