Chapter 15 - The Letter Trevor Never Sent

During an inventory of stored belongings, I found a letter.

Trevor had written it three years earlier.

Never mailed.

Claire,

Sometimes I look at everything you've built and wonder what you need me for.

That line stopped me.

I continued.

He wrote about feeling small beside me.

About fearing everyone knew I was more successful.

About wanting something that belonged only to him.

For years, I'd wondered when Trevor changed.

The letter gave me another possibility.

Maybe he hadn't changed.

Maybe insecurity had grown until entitlement offered him an easier explanation.

Instead of asking, How can I grow?

He had asked, How can I take what she has?

I folded the letter.

Then burned it in the fireplace.

Not angrily.

May you like

Quietly.

Some answers don't deserve permanent storage.
