Chapter 11 - The Grandmother Who Wanted an Heir

Margaret requested a private settlement.

She offered to surrender claims to certain assets if I agreed not to pursue civil recovery against her.

Elena asked what I wanted.

“Accountability.”

Margaret and I met across a conference table.

She looked older.

“You have everything now,” she said.

“No.”

“The company. The house. Daniel is ruined.”

“I have Lily. That's what matters.”

Her eyes shifted.

“She is still a Whitmore.”

I stared at her.

“You called her a failure before she was twenty-four hours old.”

“I was angry.”

“No. You were honest.”

Margaret looked down.

For the first time, she seemed ashamed.

“I was raised to believe the family name passed through sons.”

“And look what that belief cost you.”

She cried.

I felt no triumph.

Only sadness.

People can spend entire lives worshipping traditions that destroy the people standing in front of them.

Margaret asked to see Lily.

I refused.

“Not now.”

May you like

“Ever?”

“That depends on what you become, not what you say today.”
