Chapter 14 - The Vote That Changed Everything

The final shareholder meeting took place nearly a year after Lily's birth.
Investigations and civil findings had established enough misconduct to activate my father's shareholder protections.
Daniel's ownership position changed dramatically.
A negotiated resolution followed.
He surrendered significant control.
Whitmore Development appointed professional independent management.
I became chair of the board.
Not CEO.
I didn't want Daniel's old chair.
I wanted governance strong enough that nobody could repeat what he had done.
Sam shook my hand after the vote.
“Your father would be proud.”
I looked at Lily's photograph in my notebook.
“I hope so.”
Then Sam smiled.
May you like
“He always said you were better with numbers than either of us.”
That made me cry.
