Chapter 16 - The Woman Who Asked for a Job

Two years after Elena appeared on the marble steps, we attended a foundation event together.
It was the first large event she had agreed to attend.
As we approached the entrance, Elena stopped.
Same marble.
Same doors.
Same winter air.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
Then we heard someone nearby.
“Excuse me.”
A young mother stood beside the steps.
She looked nervous.
“I heard the foundation helps people find work.”
Elena looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the memory pass through her.
A starving mother.
A sleeping child.
A desperate question.
Do you need a maid?
Elena walked toward the woman.
“What kind of work are you looking for?”
“Anything.”
Elena smiled gently.
“Let’s start with what you want to do.”
They went inside together.
I remained outside for a moment.
Two years earlier, Elena had stood in almost exactly the same place believing she had nothing.
Now she was walking through those doors helping someone else discover she had choices.
That was victory.
Not revenge.
Not headlines.
Not watching Margaret leave in handcuffs.
May you like
Freedom.
