Chapter 9 - The Empty Grave

Elena asked to see her grave.

I didn’t want her to.

She insisted.

We drove there on a gray afternoon.

Her name was carved into black granite.

**ELENA MERCER

BELOVED WIFE

1992–2024**

She stood silently.

“How many times did you come?”

“Every Sunday.”

Her face crumpled.

“Daniel…”

“I talked to you.”

“What did you say?”

“Everything.”

I told the grave about work.

Birthdays.

Christmas.

My loneliness.

The dreams where Elena walked through the front door.

She took my hand.

Then she asked the question I feared.

“Did you ever believe Margaret when she told you to move on?”

“No.”

“Not even once?”

“I tried.”

I told her about Victoria.

Two dinners.

One kiss I stopped immediately.

Nothing more.

Elena nodded.

“I’m not angry.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because while I was trying to convince myself you were gone, you were waiting for me.”

She touched my cheek.

“We were both surviving.”

The cemetery later removed the marker.

The coffin was opened under official supervision.

Empty.

Completely empty.

That discovery became another piece of evidence.

But Elena asked for the stone.

We kept it.

Not as a memorial to her death.

As proof that documents, wealth, and powerful people could create convincing lies—but they could not transform a living person into a dead one.
