Chapter 8 - The Guard Who Never Came Back

His name was Nathan Cole.
He had worked for Mercer Security for eleven years.
Elena remembered him because he was the only guard who occasionally looked ashamed.
Then one week before her escape, Nathan disappeared.
Investigators found him alive in Ohio.
He had fled after discovering Margaret planned to move Elena and Lily to another property.
A location overseas.
Nathan sabotaged one security camera.
He left a farmhouse window unlocked.
And on Elena’s final night there, he deliberately sent the second guard alcohol.
“I couldn’t walk her out myself,” Nathan explained. “Margaret would have known.”
“So you created an opening.”
“Yes.”
Elena cried when she heard.
Nathan had also copied files.
Thousands of them.
Those files revealed Margaret’s final plan.
She intended to declare Daniel emotionally unfit after arranging his marriage to Victoria.
Then she would consolidate voting control of Mercer Holdings.
Victoria knew nothing about the kidnappings.
She had simply been manipulated.
For once, the conspiracy became smaller instead of larger.
That mattered.
Because Elena needed to know the whole world had not betrayed her.
A handful of people had.
And another handful had quietly tried to help.
Nathan’s evidence completed the timeline.
The prosecution no longer depended solely on Elena’s testimony.
There were recordings.
Financial records.
Property documents.
Medical records.
Witnesses.
Security footage.
And Margaret’s ledger.
For the first time, Elena slept through the night.
But I didn’t.
At 3:14 a.m., Lily began crying.
I entered the nursery.
Elena was already there.
She handed Lily to me.
“You missed this part.”
“What part?”
“The three-in-the-morning part.”
I smiled.
“I have thirteen months to make up.”
“You have the rest of her life.”
Those words changed me.
I had been obsessed with recovering stolen time.
But time could not be recovered.
Only new memories could be made.
May you like
So at three in the morning, with Lily between us, Elena and I began making them.
