Chapter 10 - The Envelope

Inside was a handwritten apology.
Not to me.
To the employees.
I didn't trust it.
Neither did Mia.
“She wants another interview,” Mia said.
“Probably.”
But Vanessa requested no cameras.
No press.
No lawyers.
She asked to meet the employees she had mistreated.
Several refused.
That was their right.
Five agreed.
Vanessa entered a conference room without makeup, assistants, or friends.
She sat across from Mia.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa said, “I accused you of stealing.”
Mia nodded.
“I found the bracelet in my purse.”
“Yes.”
“And I didn't apologize.”
“No.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I'm sorry.”
Mia didn't forgive her.
Not immediately.
And nobody asked her to.
Accountability wasn't a performance where the victim had to make the offender feel better.
Vanessa spent three hours listening.
She cried once.
Nobody comforted her.
When she left, she looked smaller.
But perhaps more human.
I still didn't know whether she had changed.
Real change takes longer than one apology.
