Chapter 14 - “She's Not Your Servant”

The guest demanded fresh towels.

Rosa brought them.

He complained about the fold.

Then he tossed them onto the floor.

“Do it again.”

Rosa bent down.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I'll get them.”

The guest looked at her uniform.

“Who asked you?”

Vanessa froze.

Months earlier, she might have said the same thing.

The irony wasn't lost on anyone.

She picked up the towels.

The man pointed.

“And hurry.”

Vanessa looked at Rosa.

Then at him.

“Sir, we'll replace the towels.”

“Good.”

“But you don't need to throw them at employees.”

His eyebrows rose.

“Excuse me?”

Vanessa's hands trembled.

Still, she continued.

“She isn't your servant.”

Rosa stared at her.

The guest demanded a manager.

Margaret arrived.

After hearing both sides, she calmly told the guest that Blackwood employees were expected to provide exceptional service—and guests were expected to treat them with basic dignity.

The guest threatened to leave.

Margaret opened the door.

He stayed.

That night, Vanessa cried in the locker room.

“I sounded exactly like him,” she whispered.

Rosa sat beside her.

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked devastated.

Rosa added, “But today you didn't act like him.”

That was the first time I saw Vanessa understand the difference between guilt and change.

Guilt looked backward.

May you like

Change decided what you did next.
