Chapter 17 - One Year Later

Exactly one year after the gala, I stood beneath the same chandelier.

Same marble.

Same staircase.

But everything felt different.

The Blackwood Foundation gala had returned.

This time, every hotel employee working the event was invited to the reception afterward as a guest.

Mia had completed her management training.

Rosa had received a scholarship for her daughter.

Elena now directed our independent employee advocacy office.

Margaret still terrified new housekeepers.

Some traditions deserved to survive.

My father attended with doctor's approval and strict instructions not to work.

He ignored half of them.

Then I noticed a woman standing near the entrance.

Red dress.

For one terrifying second, I thought Vanessa had chosen the same gown.

Then she stepped into the light.

Different dress.

Same color.

She caught me looking.

“Too much?”

I smiled.

“Brave choice.”

She laughed.

Vanessa wasn't the guest of honor.

She wasn't seated with billionaires.

She had purchased one ordinary charity ticket.

During dinner, a young server accidentally spilled water across Vanessa's table.

The boy froze.

His face went pale.

“I'm so sorry.”

The entire table became quiet.

Vanessa looked down at her wet dress.

Then at him.

For one second, I saw the memory hit her.

Champagne.

Marble.

A woman on her knees.

Vanessa picked up her napkin.

“It's water.”

The boy swallowed.

“I can get my manager.”

“You can get me another napkin.”

He blinked.

“That's all?”

Vanessa smiled.

“That's all.”

The boy hurried away.

Vanessa looked across the ballroom.

Our eyes met.

Neither of us said anything.

We didn't need to.

That small moment mattered more than every apology she had ever given.

Because nobody had been watching when she made the choice.

May you like

Or at least, she hadn't known anyone was.
