Chapter 13 - Maria Takes the Witness Stand

When Maria testified months later, the courtroom was full.
Reporters expected drama.
Maria gave them truth.
She described working for my parents.
She described Vanessa accusing her of stealing.
She described the rope.
The lighter.
The threats.
Then Vanessa's attorney asked:
“Mrs. Alvarez, isn't it true Mr. Mercer treats you more like family than an employee?”
“Yes.”
“So your loyalty to him might influence your testimony?”
Maria tilted her head.
“My loyalty doesn't change what happened.”
The attorney tried again.
“You care about Mr. Mercer.”
“Very much.”
“Then you want to help his case.”
Maria looked toward me.
Then toward Vanessa.
“I don't need to help truth.”
The courtroom went silent.
That sentence appeared online before lunch.
People shared it thousands of times.
But the moment that mattered happened afterward.
Vanessa asked permission to speak briefly to Maria through counsel.
Maria agreed.
I didn't hear their conversation.
Later I asked what Vanessa said.
“She apologized.”
“Did you accept?”
“I told her I heard her.”
“That's different.”
“Yes.”
“Will you forgive her?”
Maria thought carefully.
“Maybe.”
I stared.
“How?”
“Forgiveness isn't pretending she didn't do it.”
She adjusted her handbag.
“It means I don't want to carry her around forever.”
I understood.
I had been carrying Vanessa too.
Not love.

Anger.
Perhaps both could become prisons.
