Chapter 16 - The Last Secret From London

A year after my early return from London, Nathan called.
“One final loose end.”
I groaned.
“I thought we ran out of secrets.”
“So did I.”
A London bank had released records after lengthy legal proceedings.
There was an account Grant had hidden.
The money wasn't mine.
It belonged to Vanessa.
Millions.
She had accumulated enough to leave Grant long before she met me.
That changed one assumption.
Vanessa hadn't participated because she was financially trapped.
She had choices.
She chose the scheme.
But another transaction caught Nathan's attention.
Three months before the night in the foyer, Vanessa transferred $100,000 anonymously to a domestic violence shelter.
I stared at the record.
“Why?”
“No idea.”
I never discovered why.
And eventually I decided I didn't need to.
People aren't equations.
A person capable of generosity can also be cruel.
A person who commits terrible acts can still have moments of conscience.
One good act doesn't erase harm.
One terrible chapter doesn't necessarily explain every page.
The evidence belonged to investigators.
The lesson belonged to me.
I stopped trying to turn Vanessa into either a monster or a misunderstood victim.

She was a human being who repeatedly made destructive choices.
That was enough.
