Chapter 15 - The Offer That Shocked Maria

On the anniversary of the night I came home, I called Maria into my study.

She crossed her arms.

“If you're trying to retire me again—”

“Sit down.”

“No.”

“Maria.”

“Elijah.”

We stared at each other.

I surrendered.

“Fine. Stand.”

I gave her a folder.

She opened it.

Then immediately closed it.

“No.”

“You haven't read it.”

“I saw enough.”

Inside was an offer to join the board of the Mercer Foundation.

Not ceremonial.

Voting authority.

Compensation.

Real responsibility.

“You've spent years telling me what I'm doing wrong for free,” I said. “Seems inefficient.”

She tried not to smile.

“I don't belong on a board.”

“Why?”

“I cleaned this house.”

“And?”

She had no answer.

“You protected my parents. You protected me. You recognized character faster than half the executives I've hired.”

“That doesn't make me qualified.”

“No. Your judgment does.”

She stared at the folder again.

“I didn't finish high school until I was thirty-eight.”

“I know.”

“I don't have a business degree.”

“Neither did my father when he started Mercer Aerospace.”

Her eyes filled.

“That isn't fair.”

“What?”

“Using your father.”

“He'd approve.”

“He would.”

She finally sat.

Then she signed.

The first meeting she attended, Maria challenged a $4 million proposal within twenty minutes.

She was right.

I smiled throughout the argument.

“What?” she demanded afterward.

“Nothing.”

“You're annoying.”

“Board members shouldn't insult the chairman.”

“Fire me.”

I laughed.

The woman Vanessa called “the maid” now had a vote over millions of dollars in charitable investments.

But that wasn't why I felt proud.

Maria hadn't risen because I rescued her.

May you like

She had always possessed the qualities Vanessa couldn't see.

All I did was finally make room for them to be recognized.
