Chapter 18 - The Column Covered in Flowers

Our wedding took place at the mansion.

Small.

Family.

Friends.

Employees who had known me for decades.

No magazine exclusives.

No celebrity guests.

No spectacle.

Before the ceremony, I stood alone in the foyer.

The marble column was covered in white flowers.

Claire hadn't known its significance when she chose the decoration.

Maria walked downstairs in a dark blue gown.

She followed my eyes.

“The column.”

“Yes.”

“Thinking about that night?”

“A little.”

She stood beside me.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“Vanessa thought tying me there showed everyone my place.”

I looked at her.

“And?”

Maria smiled.

“Turns out my place was wherever I decided.”

I hugged her.

She complained about wrinkling her dress.

Then Claire appeared at the top of the stairs.

I forgot everything else.

After the ceremony, Maria gave a toast.

She didn't mention Vanessa.

She didn't mention the investigation.

She simply said:

“A house isn't made safe by locks, cameras, or money. It's made safe by the people inside knowing they matter.”

I looked around.

She was right.

My father built the mansion.

My mother made it warm.

Vanessa nearly turned it into a place I hated.

Maria helped me reclaim it.

Claire helped me fill it with something new.

And I finally understood that home wasn't something wealth could purchase.

Home was trust earned repeatedly.
