Chapter 10 - The Letter I Never Opened

The letter Daniel sent after the wedding remained inside my desk for almost a year.
Then one rainy afternoon, I opened it.
Not because I missed him.
Because I no longer feared what his words could do to me.
It contained apologies.
Excuses.
Memories.
Blame.
Promises.
Exactly what I expected.
Near the end, Daniel wrote:
You were supposed to save me.
I read the sentence twice.
Then I understood the final lie our relationship had been built upon.
It had never been my job.
I folded the letter.
I didn't burn it.
I didn't dramatically tear it apart.
I placed it in the evidence archive.
Then I returned to work.
Because sometimes the strongest ending isn't destruction.
May you like
It's irrelevance.
