Chapter 12 - Evelyn's Confession

Evelyn did not apologize.

Not exactly.

Her letter began with excuses.

How she had been raised.

What Charles expected.

How appearances became survival.

I nearly stopped reading.

Then came one honest sentence.

I saw what Daniel did to you, and I chose the family name over you.

I stared at it.

No justification followed.

For once, Evelyn had written the truth without decorating it.

She admitted helping Charles conceal financial crimes.

She admitted participating in efforts to discredit Jonathan.

She admitted telling Daniel that powerful men survived scandals if their families remained united.

Then:

I taught my son that consequences were things poorer people suffered.

That sentence stayed with me.

I gave the letter to prosecutors.

Then I wrote Evelyn one reply.

Truth matters. Continue telling it where it can repair something.

Nothing more.

I wasn't interested in becoming her confessor.

Forgiveness wasn't a service I owed anyone.

But accountability could still produce something useful.

And Evelyn's testimony was about to reveal where the last missing millions had gone.
