Chapter 17 - The Man Who Didn't Ask Me to Belong to Him

I met Ethan Cole almost two years after the wedding.
There was no dramatic collision.
No billionaire secret.
No instant obsession.
He was a structural engineer assigned to one of my projects.
For three months, we argued about load-bearing walls.
Then he asked me to coffee.
I said no.
“Okay,” he said.
And continued discussing concrete.
That tiny response surprised me more than flowers ever could.
Two weeks later, I asked him.
We moved slowly.
When I needed space, he gave it.
When I disagreed, he didn't punish me.
When I succeeded, he didn't treat my independence as competition.
One evening he asked why I sometimes became quiet when someone grabbed my wrist unexpectedly.
I told him.
He didn't demand details.
He simply asked:
“What would make you feel comfortable?”
It was such an ordinary question.
I almost cried.
Healthy love, I learned, rarely announces itself with fireworks.

Sometimes it sounds like someone asking what you need and believing the answer.
