Chapter 13 - The Account With My Name

The final hidden account contained $9.8 million.
It was registered through a trust bearing my name.
Claire Bennett.
Daniel had created it before proposing to me.
The plan became obvious.
If regulators discovered the money, documents would point toward me.
Marriage would make the story easier to sell.
I wasn't only supposed to become Daniel's wife.
I was supposed to become his exit strategy.
But the account also contained something valuable.
Transaction histories.
Every recipient.
Every intermediary.
Every corrupt vendor.
Investigators recovered nearly all the remaining pension money.
When employees learned their retirement accounts would be restored, Mercer Tower erupted in applause.
I wasn't there.
I was at the community center reviewing plumbing plans.
Jonathan called.
“You should hear this.”
He held his phone toward the crowd.
Hundreds of people were cheering.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time, applause connected to my wedding story didn't make me uncomfortable.
Because this applause wasn't for humiliation.
May you like
It was for people getting back what belonged to them.
