Chapter 6 - The First Secret Inside My Father’s Company

I almost hung up.

Not because I hated Cassandra.

Hate requires energy.

I had spent years reclaiming mine.

But hearing her voice reopened an old door.

“Gone where?”

“I don’t know.”

Her breathing was uneven.

“He left this morning.”

“Why are you calling me?”

“Because he said your name.”

Silence.

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“We were arguing. He said none of this would have happened if everyone hadn’t lied to him about you.”

I sat down.

“What lies?”

Cassandra started crying harder.

That was when I finally learned the full shape of what my family had done.

Mom had told Daniel I was hiding serious debt.

Dad told him I planned to abandon his career opportunities for law school and expected him to follow.

Cassandra told him I had admitted privately that I wasn’t sure I wanted marriage.

None of it was true.

They had isolated him inside a manufactured reality.

Did that excuse him?

No.

He had still chosen not to ask me.

But betrayal built on lies remains betrayal.

“Why tell me this now?” I asked.

“Because Daniel found something.”

“What?”

“Dad’s emails.”

My pulse changed.

Cassandra explained that Daniel’s company was preparing for an audit.

Some of Dad’s early investment arrangements had surfaced.

Documents connected Whitmore Holdings, Cassandra’s property firm, Daniel’s company—and Harborlight.

“Cassandra.”

“What?”

“Did you know Dad used charity money?”

Silence.

Too long.

“Cassandra?”

“I thought they were loans.”

My eyes closed.

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“You own the company that received $1.8 million.”

“I didn’t control the accounts.”

“Your name is on them.”

“Dad handled everything!”

She sounded terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

There is a difference.

For the first time, I wondered whether Cassandra had been Dad’s favorite because she was easier to control.

Maybe the golden child wasn’t always loved more.

Maybe she was simply more useful.

“I need you to send me everything Daniel left.”

She hesitated.

“Will you help me?”

I thought about the red dress.

The roses.

The caption.

Some women are chosen for a reason.

“I’ll help uncover the truth.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I know.”

She cried silently.

Then said, “Okay.”

The files arrived forty minutes later.

And buried inside them was an email from Dad.

Seven years old.

Subject line:

EMMA / DANIEL SITUATION

I opened it.

One sentence changed the way I remembered the worst night of my life.

Once Daniel understands Cassandra comes with the investment package, he’ll make the rational choice. Emma will get over it.

I stared at the screen.

He had planned it.

Not merely encouraged it.

Planned it.

Adrian read the email over my shoulder.

Then quietly said:

“Your father didn’t steal a relationship from you.”

I looked at him.

“He tried to price you.”

That night, I stopped being afraid of destroying Dad’s reputation.

Because I finally understood.

May you like

I would not destroy it.

I would simply stop protecting it.
