Chapter 14 - Mom Laughs at the Gala Invitation

Mom later told me exactly what happened when they arrived.
Dad complained about the valet.
Cassandra noticed the press.
Mom studied the enormous floral arrangements.
Then they approached registration.
“Name?” the hostess asked.
“Edward Whitmore.”
She smiled.
“Of course. You’re guests of Ms. Cole.”
Dad frowned.
“Emma?”
“Yes, sir. The host.”
Mom laughed.
Apparently she thought it was a misunderstanding.
“Emma isn’t hosting this.”
The woman checked her tablet.
“Emma Cole is chair of Harborlight and tonight’s gala host.”
Cassandra went still.
Dad said nothing.
They entered.
Their table was near the front.
Not because I wanted to embarrass them.
Because the event planner had grouped founding-family members together.
Minutes passed.
Guests filled the ballroom.
Then the lights dimmed.
The screens displayed photographs from Harborlight shelters, classrooms, legal clinics, and community programs.
A narrator spoke about Grandma Rose.
About rebuilding.
About integrity.
My father’s face reportedly tightened.
Then my name appeared.
EMMA COLE — CHAIR, HARBORLIGHT FOUNDATION
Mom stopped smiling.
And behind the curtain, I heard the announcer say:
“Please welcome the woman who led Harborlight through its most ambitious expansion in thirty years.”
May you like
I took one breath.
Then stepped into the light.
