Chapter 15 - The Woman in Black at the Podium

Camera flashes erupted.

I walked toward the transparent podium.

For a moment, the ballroom disappeared.

All I could see was Dad.

Mom.

Cassandra.

Dad looked as though someone had changed the rules of reality without telling him.

Mom’s lips parted.

Cassandra simply stared.

I placed my hands on the podium.

“Good evening.”

My voice did not shake.

“Thank you for joining us.”

Applause.

I continued.

“Harborlight began with my grandmother, Rose Whitmore, who believed financial independence could change the direction of a life.”

My eyes briefly met Mom’s.

“She also believed accountability matters most when nobody expects to be questioned.”

Dad shifted in his seat.

I did not look at him again.

I talked about scholarships.

Housing.

Legal services.

Women who had rebuilt careers after losing everything.

Then I said:

“Tonight is not about where people begin. It is about what becomes possible when someone finally receives the tools to choose their own future.”

Adrian waited backstage.

At the appropriate moment, I introduced him.

“My partner in life has supported Harborlight’s technology and transparency mission from the beginning. Please welcome my husband, Adrian Cole.”

He walked onto the stage.

And that was when Cassandra grabbed Mom’s arm.
