Chapter 12 - My Father’s Company Starts Falling Apart

By the time the invitation arrived, Whitmore Holdings was struggling.

Not because I sabotaged it.

Because Dad had built too much of the company on hidden leverage and personal influence.

Banks began asking questions.

Investors withdrew.

Former allies stopped answering calls.

The board voted to remove him as chairman pending investigation.

My shares helped make that vote possible.

When Samuel told me the result, I felt less satisfaction than I expected.

Dad had spent his life acting invincible.

Seeing him reduced did not repair what he had done.

It simply proved invincibility had always been a costume.

Cassandra resigned from her property company and began rebuilding quietly.

She took a salaried job.

A real one.

No family title.

No office provided by Dad.

We spoke occasionally.

Our relationship was not magically repaired.

Some things heal crooked.

But at least they heal.

Dad refused to change.

He told everyone I had orchestrated a revenge campaign because I was bitter about Daniel.

That story became increasingly difficult to sell when Daniel publicly cooperated with investigators.

Then Dad received the Harborlight gala invitation.

According to Cassandra, he threw it onto the kitchen table.

“Emma thinks she’s important now.”

Mom had moved into her own apartment by then.

She merely said:

“Apparently important enough that you’re planning to attend.”

Dad glared.

“I want to see what game she’s playing.”

Cassandra picked up the invitation.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Look at the sponsor list.”

He did.

The companies listed included several investors he had been trying unsuccessfully to meet for months.

His expression changed.

That was all Cassandra needed to see.

“You’re going because you need them.”

Dad said nothing.

Six years earlier, he had told Daniel that Cassandra came with connections.

Now he was attending my gala because I had them.

Life does not always deliver poetic justice.

Sometimes it sends embossed stationery.
