Chapter 12 - Returning to Apex

Sarah stood outside the building six weeks later.

The old Apex sign was gone.

Ghostly marks remained where the letters had been.

Cole handed her a paint roller.

“Ready?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Sarah laughed.

Together they painted over the black-and-red walls.

Noah installed shelves.

Marcus assembled the front desk.

Emily cleaned mirrors.

Derek arrived carrying mats.

Nobody treated the moment like some grand symbolic ceremony.

That made it more meaningful.

At noon, Sarah stood in the exact place where she had once woken gasping.

She expected panic.

Instead she felt sadness.

Then gratitude.

Not gratitude for what Derek had done.

Never that.

Gratitude that it hadn’t been the final sentence of her story.

Derek approached cautiously.

“You okay?”

Sarah nodded.

“This is where it happened.”

“I know.”

He looked ashamed.

Sarah studied him.

“Do you ever wish Cole hadn’t walked in?”

Derek thought carefully.

“No.”

“Really?”

“I wish I hadn’t hurt you.”

He looked around.

“But once I did, somebody needed to stop pretending I was okay.”

Sarah nodded.

That was the closest they would ever come to discussing forgiveness.

Opening day drew hundreds.

The new sign read:

HARBOR GRAPPLING & COMMUNITY CENTER.

Inside, they preserved one section of the old cinderblock wall.

On it they mounted the original handwritten paper.

RULE ONE: A TAP ENDS THE ROUND.

Children ran across mats where adults had once been afraid to speak.

Sarah watched from the doorway.

Cole joined her.

“You realize we still haven’t finished moving your bookshelf.”

“That was almost two years ago.”

“Exactly.”

Sarah laughed.

“You’re a terrible mover.”

“I drove six hours.”

“And started a gym scandal.”

“Technically Derek started it.”

“Fair.”

Cole looked around.

“You staying?”

Sarah knew what he meant.

Not tonight.

In jiu-jitsu.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Sarah smiled.

“I’ve got unfinished business.”

May you like

And she did.

Her purple belt was waiting somewhere in the future.
