Chapter 3 - The Video in the Mirror

Sarah barely slept.
By Saturday morning, moving boxes covered her apartment, but nobody was packing.
Cole sat at the kitchen table reading Noah’s messages.
Sarah stood by the window holding coffee she had forgotten to drink.
At 8:17 a.m., Emily called.
“Sarah, someone recorded last night.”
Sarah straightened.
“What?”
“The security camera.”
“Travis has cameras?”
“Two. One points at reception. The other catches the mat through the mirror.”
Cole looked up.
Sarah put the call on speaker.
“Can we get it?”
Emily hesitated.
“Maybe not anymore.”
“Why?”
“Because Travis came in at six this morning.”
Cole’s eyes narrowed.
“How do you know?”
“I teach the kids’ class Saturdays. He canceled it when I arrived. Then he went into the office and locked the door.”
Sarah understood.
“He’s deleting it.”
“Probably.”
Cole stood.
“Don’t go there.”
Sarah looked at him.
Emily asked, “Why?”
“If the footage matters, handle it properly. Nobody confronts him.”
Cole’s restraint surprised Sarah.
The previous night, she had watched him control Derek in seconds.
Now he seemed more interested in preventing another confrontation than winning one.
That was when Sarah understood something she had missed.
Cole’s strength wasn’t that he could hurt someone.
It was that he knew when not to.
Sarah saved every message she had received.
Noah agreed to speak with her.
Three former members did too.
By noon, Sarah had a folder containing years of complaints.
She expected anger.
Instead, she felt grief.
People had walked into Apex wanting confidence.
Some had left believing their fear made them weak.
That afternoon, another message arrived.
Unknown number.
I have the footage.
Sarah stared at it.
WHO IS THIS?
The reply came.
MARCUS. FRONT DESK.
Sarah remembered him—a quiet college student who worked evenings.
Marcus called.
“Travis told me to erase the recording.”
Sarah’s heartbeat accelerated.
“Did you?”
“I told him I did.”
Cole leaned closer.
Marcus continued.
“I copied it first.”
“Why?”
Silence.
Then Marcus said, “Because my little brother starts training next year. And last night I realized I would never let him roll with Derek.”
The video arrived twenty minutes later.
Sarah didn’t want to watch.
Cole offered to screen it first.
“No,” she said.
She needed to see.
The footage was distant but clear.
Derek passed her guard.
He applied the choke.
Sarah tapped.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Her hand moved to Derek’s shoulder.
Derek looked directly toward the mirror.
Then tightened.
Sarah watched her own body go limp.
Cole paused the video.
“That’s enough.”
Sarah swallowed.
“No.”
The recording continued.
Derek released her.
Students looked uncomfortable.
Travis stood near the timer.
Watching.
Doing nothing.
Then Cole appeared.
Sarah watched her brother confront Derek.
The exchange was shorter than it had felt.
Derek initiated.
Cole controlled him.
Derek tapped.
Cole released immediately.
There it was.
The difference between training and punishment captured in one frame.
Sarah closed the laptop.
Her phone rang.
Travis.
Cole looked at her.
“You don’t owe him a conversation.”
Sarah answered anyway.
“Hello?”
Travis sounded exhausted.
“Sarah, we need to fix this.”
“Fix what?”
“The misunderstanding.”
Sarah almost laughed.
“You watched.”
“Things happen fast.”
“I have the video.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
Then Travis’s tone changed.
“Where did you get it?”
Sarah immediately regretted revealing that.
Cole motioned for her to stop talking.
Travis continued.
“That footage belongs to Apex.”
Sarah ended the call.
Thirty seconds later, a text appeared.
DELETE THE VIDEO.
Then another.
YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DISTRIBUTE PRIVATE SECURITY FOOTAGE.
Cole read it.
“Save everything.”
Sarah did.
At 3:12 p.m., Apex Grappling posted a public statement.
It claimed that an “unfortunate training incident” had been taken out of context and that a visitor had escalated the situation.
Sarah read the statement twice.
Her name wasn’t mentioned.
Neither was Derek’s.
Comments were disabled.
Then Cole pointed at the final sentence.
Apex maintains the highest standards of safety and respect.
Sarah laughed bitterly.
Her phone buzzed again.
This time it was Noah.
Don’t let them rewrite it again.
Sarah looked around her half-packed apartment.
Twenty-four hours earlier, her biggest problem had been whether her couch would fit through the new doorway.
Now hundreds of people were arguing about what happened inside a gym most had never heard of.
Sarah didn’t want fame.
She didn’t want revenge.
She wanted one thing.
The truth.
She reopened the video.
But before she could decide what to do, another message arrived.
This one came from Derek.
May you like
And it contained only seven words.
You have no idea what you started.
