Chapter 16 - Sarah’s Purple Belt

Three years after the night Derek ignored her tap, Sarah stood in the center of Harbor.
Elena held a purple belt.
Sarah covered her mouth.
“No.”
Everyone laughed.
“Yes,” Elena said.
Sarah looked toward Cole.
He was filming badly.
“Turn your phone sideways!”
“I’m trying!”
“You’ve done classified operations and can’t record video?”
“Different training!”
The room erupted.
Elena tied the belt around Sarah.
Sarah cried.
No dramatic sobbing.
Just quiet tears.
She remembered the woman she had been.
The beginner who thought toughness meant tolerating anything.
She wished she could speak to her.
She would tell her:
You don’t need to become fearless.
You need to learn which fear protects you and which fear controls you.
After promotion, Mia hugged her.
Noah hugged her.
Emily hugged her.
Then Derek approached.
He extended his hand.
Sarah looked at it.
Then hugged him.
Derek froze.
“You earned that,” Sarah said.
His eyes filled.
Sarah stepped back.
“That doesn’t erase anything.”
“I know.”
“But neither does the past erase everything after it.”
Derek nodded.
That was forgiveness for Sarah.
Not forgetting.
Not excusing.
Not pretending.
Simply refusing to remain chained to the worst moment forever.
Cole approached afterward.
“Proud of you.”
Sarah smiled.
“More than when you threw Derek?”
Cole groaned.
“We are never getting rid of that story, are we?”
“Nope.”
They laughed.
A photographer captured the moment.
That photograph became Sarah’s favorite.
Not the viral security footage.
Not Cole confronting Derek.
This.
