Chapter 14 - Cole’s New Mission

Cole never intended to stay at Harbor permanently.
Then Harbor gave him a reason.
Veterans began attending his stress-management sessions.
Some missed teamwork.
Some missed structure.
Some simply needed somewhere to belong.
Cole understood that.
He built a weekly program.
No uniforms.
No rank.
No pretending the past didn’t matter.
Sarah watched her brother change.
The man who had once measured usefulness through missions began measuring it differently.
One veteran returned to school.
Another reconnected with his family.
Another became an assistant kids’ coach.
Cole never claimed credit.
That was exactly why people trusted him.
One night Sarah found him alone after class.
“You happy?”
Cole considered it.
“Yeah.”
“That sounded suspiciously healthy.”
“Don’t tell anyone.”
Sarah smiled.
“Your reputation is safe.”
Cole looked across the mats.
“I used to think purpose had to be dramatic.”
“And now?”
“Sometimes purpose is unlocking the door before everyone arrives.”
Sarah leaned against him.
“Or helping your annoying sister move.”
“That was definitely combat.”
She laughed.
Cole laughed too.
Neither noticed Derek standing near the office until he spoke.
“I got offered a coaching job.”
Sarah turned.
“Where?”
“Another gym.”
Cole studied him.
“You taking it?”
Derek shook his head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
Derek looked toward the beginners.
“Because I’m not sure being better means I’m ready to be responsible for other people.”
Sarah stared at him.
Two years earlier, Derek had believed rank automatically gave him authority.
Now he questioned whether he deserved it.
That question told Sarah more about his progress than any apology ever could.

But Derek’s decision would soon matter.
Because Harbor was about to face its first major crisis since reopening.
