Chapter 11 - The Photograph at My Door

Eighteen months after the hospital call, someone left a photograph outside my penthouse.
It showed Grant holding Oliver.
Nothing threatening.
Nothing mysterious.
On the back were four words.
He finally told me everything.
Piper had left it.
I called her.
“What does that mean?”
“Grant told me he knew you were trying to have children again before the affair.”
I went silent.
Years earlier, I had quietly explored fertility treatment one final time.
Grant knew.
He had told me he was too exhausted to begin again.
Three months later, his affair with Piper started.
That revelation hurt in a completely new place.
Not because I wanted Grant back.
Because I finally understood the cruelty of the timing.
When I confronted him, he did not deny it.
“I was afraid.”
“Of having a child with me?”
“Of failing again.”
“So you created a child with someone else?”
He covered his face.
“There is no explanation that makes it acceptable.”
Finally.
A sentence with no excuse attached.
I left.
And strangely, that was the conversation that freed me most.
There was no secret explanation capable of making betrayal reasonable.
