Chapter 17 - Oliver’s Question

Oliver was four when he asked why I was not his aunt.
We were at Piper’s apartment.
“Because I’m not related to you,” I said.
He frowned.
“But you come to my birthday.”
“Yes.”
“You bring good presents.”
Piper laughed.
“That apparently establishes kinship.”
Oliver looked at me seriously.
“Then what are you?”
I considered the question.
“A friend.”
He accepted that immediately.
Children sometimes understand boundaries better than adults.
“Okay.”
Then he handed me a toy dinosaur.
“Friend, hold this.”
I did.
And I realized something extraordinary.
The child whose existence once represented the worst morning of my life had become simply Oliver.
Not evidence.
Not scandal.
Not betrayal.
May you like
A child.
That was healing.
