Chapter 13 - Grant Comes Home

Two years after the hospital call, Grant asked to meet me.

He looked healthier.

Quieter.

Older.

We walked through Central Park.

No lawyers.

No Piper.

No business.

“I’m not asking you back,” he said.

“Good opening.”

He smiled.

“I know I destroyed the right to ask.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted to thank you.”

“For what?”

“For not punishing Oliver for being mine.”

I stopped walking.

“He isn’t responsible for you.”

“I know.”

Grant looked toward the trees.

“I spent most of my life believing consequences were things other people experienced.”

“That sounds like your mother.”

“I know.”

He laughed sadly.

Then he told me he had begun working with a nonprofit helping family businesses create ethical governance systems.

The irony was almost aggressive.

“You?”

“I know.”

I laughed.

He laughed too.

For a moment, we sounded like the people we had been before everything broke.

May you like

Then the moment passed.

And that was okay.
