Chapter 11 - The Verdict

The verdict did not restore Tyler's knees.
Dennis understood that before the first count was read.
Nothing a courtroom could say would return that Tuesday night.
Nothing could give Tyler back the basketball season he lost.
Nothing could erase the sound of gunshots from his dreams.
Justice wasn't a time machine.
It was accountability.
Barnes was convicted on serious charges arising from the shooting and subsequent obstruction; other allegations had separate legal proceedings and outcomes.
Sarah cried.
Tyler didn't.
He sat very still.
Dennis held his hand.
Barnes stared straight ahead.
When court adjourned, reporters flooded the steps.
Evelyn spoke briefly.
Dennis refused.
Then Tyler surprised everyone.
“I want to say something.”
Dennis looked at him.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
Tyler moved toward the microphones using crutches.
Cameras clicked.
He waited.
Then said:
“I don't hate Sheriff Barnes.”
The crowd quieted.
“I did for a while.”
Dennis watched his son.
“Hating him made every day still belong to him.”
Tyler paused.
“So I'm done giving him days.”
That clip traveled farther than anything else.
But Dennis's favorite moment came afterward.
In the parking garage, Tyler leaned against the car.
“Was that too cheesy?”
“Extremely.”
Tyler laughed.
“Runs in the family.”

They went home.
And for the first time in months, nobody turned on the news.
