Chapter 14 - The Scholarship Nobody Expected

College began differently than Tyler had once imagined.
No packed basketball arena.
No jersey.
No roaring student section.
He arrived with a cane.
His dorm room was accessible.
His schedule left room for therapy.
On his first day in anatomy class, another student recognized him.
“You're that kid.”
Tyler hated those words.
“What kid?”
“The sheriff kid.”
Tyler stared.
Then smiled.
“My name's Tyler.”
The student apologized.
That became Tyler's rule.
He would not spend his life being “the kid Sheriff Barnes shot.”
He volunteered in rehabilitation.
He mentored injured high-school athletes.
He studied obsessively.
By sophomore year, he earned another scholarship.
Not because he had been shot.
Because his grades were excellent.
He called Dennis.
“Guess what?”
“You got arrested.”
“What?”
“I like setting expectations low.”
“Dad.”
Dennis laughed.
Tyler told him.
May you like
Dennis sat on the courthouse loading dock afterward and quietly cried.
His son had found another court to conquer.
