Chapter 8 - Three Names on a Burned Adoption File

They did not go blindly.

Elias assembled everything they knew.

Serena.

Julian.

Celeste.

Jacqueline.

The offshore archive.

And one missing detail:

Why Saraphina?

The bank documents offered the answer.

Access required three separate proofs.

A biometric signature from Serena’s bloodline.

A phrase known only to Elias’s mother.

And a physical token.

The gold sun necklace.

Jacqueline possessed the necklace.

Saraphina carried the bloodline.

Celeste needed both.

The phrase remained unknown.

Unless Julian knew it.

Saraphina stared at Elias.

“What if he does?”

“Then they need only you and Jacqueline.”

The meeting location arrived.

An abandoned luxury hotel near the Italian border.

Saraphina wanted to leave immediately.

Elias insisted they wait.

For once, the delay saved them.

Matteo uncovered an old adoption file.

Partially burned.

Three names appeared.

Jacqueline Hayes.

Serena Varenna.

And Dr. Malcolm Hart.

Elias knew the name.

A physician who treated his family twenty-five years ago.

Officially dead.

Actually living in Marseille.

They found him before Celeste did.

At eighty-one, Dr. Hart was frail.

But his memory remained sharp.

When he saw Saraphina, he cried.

“Serena’s little girl.”

Saraphina sat beside him.

“You knew me?”

“I delivered you.”

Her breath caught.

“Who was my father?”

Dr. Hart looked toward Elias.

Then back.

“Julian.”

Silence.

Saraphina closed her eyes.

Elias sat heavily.

It was true.

Julian was her father.

But Dr. Hart explained the part none of them expected.

Julian and Serena had discovered the truth about Serena’s parentage before Saraphina’s birth.

They knew they were not biologically siblings.

They fell in love.

Elias’s mother helped them hide the pregnancy.

Celeste objected—not because of morality, but because Serena’s child would inherit the trust Elias’s father created.

Saraphina’s birth shifted control of the hidden fortune away from Celeste.

“That’s why she wanted me gone.”

“Yes.”

“What happened the night of the crash?”

Dr. Hart looked terrified even after twenty-one years.

“Celeste sabotaged the car.”

Elias stood.

“You’re sure?”

“I treated Serena afterward.”

Everything stopped.

“Afterward?”

“She survived.”

Elias’s voice broke.

“Where?”

“An emergency clinic near Menton. Julian carried her in. She was badly injured.”

“And my mother?”

Dr. Hart looked down.

“She died at the scene.”

Elias turned away.

“What happened to Serena?”

“She begged Julian to take the baby away.”

“Saraphina?”

“Yes. You were in another vehicle nearby with Jacqueline.”

Saraphina frowned.

“I was there?”

“You were four.”

That explained the memories.

Metal.

Rain.

Serena screaming.

The crash was not her own accident.

She had witnessed it.

But the scar?

Dr. Hart explained.

Saraphina had been injured earlier that year in a separate attack on Serena.

The child had required surgery.

Jacqueline took her to Jamaica afterward.

“And Serena?”

Dr. Hart hesitated.

“She disappeared.”

“Dead?” Saraphina asked.

“I never believed so.”

A phone rang.

Dr. Hart’s.

Unknown number.

He answered before Elias could stop him.

A woman spoke.

Saraphina heard only two words.

“Hello, Malcolm.”

Dr. Hart went white.

Celeste.

Then the line clicked.

A second voice came through.

Weak.

Female.

“Elias?”

He froze.

“Sera?”

Saraphina stood.

The woman whispered:

“Don’t bring my daughter.”

Saraphina’s knees buckled.

Elias grabbed the phone.

“Serena?”

“Please.”

Saraphina took it.

Her voice shook.

“Mama?”

Silence.

Then a sob.

A sound Saraphina had somehow carried in her memory her entire life.

“Baby.”

One word.

That was all it took.

Saraphina knew.

Her biological mother was alive.

And she was being held with Jacqueline.

The rescue had just become more than a hostage exchange—it had become a reunion twenty-one years overdue.
