Chapter 12 - The Woman in the Security Footage

The mansion gates disappeared behind reporters.
News vans lined the road.
Every photograph of Elias from the past decade appeared online.
Headlines called him criminal.
Kidnapper.
Shadow financier.
Some allegations were accurate enough to hurt.
Others were Celeste’s inventions.
The most damaging accusation was true.
He had taken Saraphina against her will.
“You did kidnap me,” she said.
They stood in his office.
“I know.”
“You threatened me.”
“I know.”
“You told me I was disposable.”
His face tightened.
“I remember.”
“So what exactly is your plan? Pretend none of it happened?”
“No.”
That answer surprised her.
Elias looked through the window at the cameras.
“I’m going to admit it.”
Saraphina stared.
“What?”
“The truth.”
“That could put you in prison.”
“Yes.”
“You’re serious?”
“I spent my entire life controlling stories.”
He looked at her.
“That is how people like Celeste survive. Everyone hides the part that makes them look bad.”
Saraphina crossed her arms.
“And suddenly you’re morally enlightened?”
“No.”
A faint smile.
“I’m tired.”
She understood that.
More than she wanted to.
But before Elias could make a statement, Serena discovered something.
Old security footage from the original crash had been preserved on one of Celeste’s servers.
Twenty-one years ago.
Rain.
A road.
Two vehicles.
Elias watched his childhood unfold in grainy black and white.
His mother’s car.
Julian’s car.
A third vehicle behind them.
Celeste’s.
Then another figure appeared.
A man standing beside Celeste.
Elias recognized him.
His father.
The man who supposedly died a year before the crash.
Alive.
Saraphina looked at Elias.
His face emptied.
“No.”
Serena began crying.
“He was alive?”
Julian entered.
Saw the screen.
Stopped.
Their father had orchestrated the entire conflict.
Celeste had not been the architect.
She had been his partner.
Possibly his successor.
The empire Elias inherited had been built upon a lie deeper than anyone understood.
Matteo searched financial records.
One account remained active.
Controlled from New York.
Transactions had occurred that morning.
Elias’s father was possibly still alive.
At more than seventy years old.
The story changed again.
Celeste’s television appearance had not merely been self-defense.
It was distraction.
While everyone watched her, money moved.
Records vanished.
Witnesses relocated.
Saraphina stared at the financial transfers.
“Where is it going?”
Matteo enlarged the destination.
A foundation.
Children’s shelters across Europe and the Caribbean.
Saraphina felt something twist.
“Why shelters?”
Serena knew.
Her face went white.
“That’s where he recruited.”
Silence.
Elias looked at her.
“Recruited what?”
“Children without records.”
Like Saraphina.
Children who could disappear easily.
Children trained as couriers, observers and future operatives because nobody noticed them.
The organization was larger than a criminal family.
It had fed on invisible people for decades.
Saraphina’s anger became ice.
“Now I understand why I was dangerous.”
Elias looked at her.
“Because you inherited the archive?”
“No.”
She turned toward him.
“Because people like Celeste and your father depend on everyone believing servants, nannies and poor children don’t matter.”
She pointed toward the footage.
“We remember things.”
Elias knew what she wanted.
Public exposure.
Not another secret war.
Saraphina walked toward the door.
“Where are you going?”
“To the reporters.”
“Saraphina.”
She turned.
“They’re using my kidnapping to protect themselves.”
“That doesn’t make what I did okay.”
“I know.”
He absorbed it.
“And that’s exactly what I’m going to say.”
The press conference happened at noon.
Saraphina stood alone.
Not beside Elias.
Not behind him.
Alone.
“My name is Saraphina Hayes,” she began. “And yes, Elias held me against my will.”
Cameras exploded with flashes.
“But that is not the entire story.”
She told them enough.
Not everything.
Enough to change the direction of the questions.
She spoke about Jacqueline.
Serena.
The hidden network.
Daniel.
Missing children.
Financial records.
Then Elias stepped forward.
He confirmed her account.
And accepted responsibility for his own actions.
That changed public attention overnight.
Authorities opened investigations.
Celeste disappeared from television.
Three shell charities were frozen.
But the biggest development came at 11:43 p.m.
A man called Saraphina’s phone.
An old voice.
American accent.
“I’ve been waiting to meet my granddaughter.”
Saraphina’s blood turned cold.
“Who are you?”
He laughed softly.
“Ask Elias what his father sounded like.”
Across the room, Elias heard the voice.
The color left his face.
Because twenty-two years after attending the man’s funeral—
Elias recognized his father.
May you like
And he had just invited Saraphina to New York.
