Chapter 4 - Eleven Minutes Too Late

By sunrise, the Moretti estate no longer looked like a wedding house.
Florists were turned away at the gate.
A delivery truck carrying engraved champagne glasses was sent back.
Wedding planners received a single message:
All preparations suspended.
Vanessa remained in one of the guest rooms under the watch of estate security until her lawyer arrived.
Luca sat beside Bruno.
I should have gone home.
Instead I fell asleep in a chair outside the study.
When I woke, someone had covered me with a blanket.
Mrs. Carter stood nearby.
“You should eat.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“That wasn’t a suggestion.”
She handed me coffee.
I looked toward the study.
“How is he?”
“Sleeping.”
“And Luca?”
“Also pretending he doesn’t need sleep.”
I smiled weakly.
Then Daniel appeared.
He carried a tablet.
“Emma.”
My stomach tightened automatically.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
He opened security footage from three days earlier.
A camera covered the east hallway.
Vanessa entered a storage room at 11:43 p.m.
Twenty minutes later she came out carrying a jewelry box.
Bruno wandered behind her.
She nearly closed the door on him.
Instead Bruno slipped inside.
Vanessa cursed and followed.
When she emerged, she was holding Bruno by the collar.
Aggressively.
Not hurting him, but angry enough that even through silent footage I could see it.
“Did you ever see her take things from those rooms?” Daniel asked.
“No.”
“Did Bruno?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel played another video.
The next morning.
Bruno walked into the kitchen carrying something in his mouth.
A small velvet pouch.
I remembered.
“Oh my God.”
“What?”
“I took that from him.”
“Where did you put it?”
“In the lost-property drawer.”
Daniel’s eyes sharpened.
“What happened next?”
“Vanessa came in.”
“Did she see it?”
“Yes.”
The memory returned.
Vanessa had snatched the pouch away.
She said it belonged to her.
Then she asked where Bruno had found it.
I told her I didn’t know.
Daniel leaned back.
“So Bruno exposed what she was doing.”
Maybe that was the reason.
Bruno had become a risk.
Not because he understood theft.
Because dogs carried things.
Dragged things.
Appeared unexpectedly.
Vanessa couldn’t control where he wandered.
And she was preparing to sell objects Luca believed were safely stored.
The old dog had nearly exposed her once.
She decided there would not be a second time.
At 9:20 Vanessa’s attorney arrived.
By ten, police were at the estate.
By noon, what had begun as an injured maid and a missing dog had expanded into suspected forgery, attempted theft and fraudulent surrender documentation.
Vanessa finally came downstairs.
She looked perfect.
Hair brushed.
Makeup flawless.
Designer coat over one arm.
She looked at me before anyone else.
“This is your fault.”
Luca appeared behind me.
“No.”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“She poisoned you against me.”
“You forged my name before Emma said one word.”
“She’s always wanted your attention.”
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was absurd.
I spent eleven months trying to be invisible.
Vanessa suddenly walked toward me.
Daniel moved between us.
“Move.”
“No.”
She looked around him.
“You think he cares about you?”
I didn’t answer.
“You’re staff, Emma. That’s all.”
“Vanessa.”
Luca’s voice cut through the foyer.
She turned.
He descended the final stair.
“I want to explain something because you appear confused.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Emma works here.”
“Yes.”
“That means I am responsible for ensuring she is treated lawfully and safely while she does.”
“She’s manipulating—”
“She was injured protecting my dog because you gave an unauthorized order.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Luca continued.
“She went back to work because you threatened her family.”
“I didn’t threaten anyone.”
Emma.
Daniel looked at me.
I swallowed.
“She said my mother would have to find another way to pay her bills.”
Vanessa smiled.
“That could mean anything.”
Mrs. Carter stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
The housekeeper held up her phone.
“It means exactly what Miss Collins said.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Mrs. Carter pressed play.
A voice filled the foyer.
Vanessa’s voice.
Cold.
Clear.
“One word, Emma, and your mother will have to find another way to pay her bills.”
I stared at Mrs. Carter.
She looked almost apologetic.
“I was on the other side of the service door.”
Vanessa whispered, “You recorded me?”
“I started recording when I heard Emma tell you Bruno needed his medicine.”
The clip continued.
My own voice.
“Please, Miss Bellini. Mr. Moretti will want to know.”
Then Vanessa:
“What Luca wants is peace before our wedding. Open the gate.”
My voice again:
“No.”
A sharp ripping sound.
Then my cry.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa’s attorney quietly closed his eyes.
Luca looked at her.
“You said Bruno attacked Emma.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“You photographed her injury.”
Silence.
“You sent that photograph to justify killing him.”
Her attorney touched her elbow.
“Vanessa. Do not respond.”
But Vanessa had lost control.
“It was a dog!”
The words echoed through the foyer.
Her lawyer froze.
So did everyone else.
Vanessa realized too late what she had said.
She turned away.
Luca’s expression changed.
Any remaining grief over the woman he thought he knew disappeared.
“Take her belongings to the gate.”
Vanessa looked back.
“You can’t throw me out.”
“I can.”
“I live here.”
“You were a guest.”
“We were getting married.”
“Not anymore.”
Her eyes filled.
For the first time, real tears appeared.
But even then, her next words were not apology.
“You’re humiliating me.”
Luca looked toward Bruno’s study.
“No.”
“You did that yourself.”
The police escorted Vanessa outside.
She paused beside me.
For half a second, I expected another threat.
Instead she whispered:
“You have no idea what you just started.”
Then she left.
That sentence stayed with me.
Because Vanessa had lost the wedding.
She had lost access to the house.
She had lost Luca.
Yet she sounded less afraid than she should have.
As though the jewelry was only one layer.
As though something larger remained hidden.
That afternoon Daniel proved my instinct right.
The forged signature on Bruno’s paperwork had been created using a scanned signature from a private Moretti financial document.
A document Vanessa should never have been able to access.
Someone had given it to her.
May you like
Someone inside Luca’s business.
And whoever it was had access to far more than a wedding storage room.
