Chapter 9 - The Wedding Guest Who Knew Too Much

Richard Vale answered Luca’s call on the first ring.

“Luca.”

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“No, you’re not.”

Silence.

Daniel had already confirmed Richard’s house was empty.

His car was gone.

Private jet grounded.

Phone moving west.

Luca continued.

“Vanessa named you.”

A soft laugh.

“That girl names everyone when frightened.”

“North Lake.”

Another silence.

Longer.

Richard’s voice changed.

“You should be careful who you trust.”

“I trusted you.”

“Yes.”

The word sounded almost regretful.

“And that was useful.”

My skin chilled.

Luca’s face didn’t move.

“Why?”

“Your father destroyed Charles Hale.”

“Charles stole from him.”

“That was the story Isabella preferred.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Leave my mother out of this.”

“Your mother started this.”

Richard claimed Isabella had manipulated Luca’s father into forcing Charles Hale from the company.

Afterward, Richard quietly helped Charles rebuild.

Years later Victor inherited the resentment.

North Lake was their revenge made profitable.

Destroy Moretti acquisitions.

Buy distressed properties.

Create scandals.

Exploit drops in value.

Vanessa provided access.

“She wasn’t supposed to involve the dog,” Richard said.

I felt sick.

Luca’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“You knew?”

“Afterward.”

“And Emma?”

“She was collateral.”

The word entered the room like poison.

Collateral.

My torn shoulder.

My mother’s fear.

My job.

My life.

Collateral.

Luca looked at me.

For the first time I saw guilt in his face.

Not because he caused it.

Because people were being harmed in a war around his name.

Richard continued.

“You can end this.”

“How?”

“Sell the river properties.”

“No.”

“Then more people become collateral.”

Daniel typed something quickly.

Tracing.

Keeping Richard talking.

Luca understood.

“Was that a threat?”

“A prediction.”

“Where’s Victor?”

Richard laughed.

“You think Vanessa knows?”

“She gave us your name.”

“She gave you what I wanted her to give.”

Daniel froze.

The trace map stopped.

The call had been routed.

Richard had anticipated it.

“You wanted us to investigate you?” Luca asked.

“I wanted your attention away from Victor.”

The line disconnected.

Daniel swore.

Thirty seconds later an alarm sounded.

Security camera.

Rear service gate.

The same gate where my uniform had torn.

A delivery van sat outside.

No scheduled delivery.

Guards approached.

The driver ran.

Inside the van they found no person.

Only a box.

Daniel refused to open it until the bomb squad cleared it.

It contained no explosive.

Inside was Bruno’s old metal food bowl.

The one missing from the kennel.

And a photograph.

Luca’s mother.

The framed photograph that had disappeared from beside Bruno’s bed.

The glass was broken.

Across Isabella’s face someone had written:

SHE SHOULD HAVE STAYED SILENT TOO.

Luca stared at it.

That message changed him.

Until then he had been defensive.

Protecting.

Responding.

Now he became deliberate.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“Bring every file on Vale.”

“Already doing it.”

“Freeze anything contractually connected to North Lake.”

“I’ll call legal.”

“Contact federal investigators.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Richard had expected private retaliation.

He knew the Moretti family history.

He knew Luca’s reputation.

He expected Luca to solve the problem in darkness.

Instead Luca chose daylight.

Documents.

Investigators.

Banks.

Regulators.

Evidence.

That was what Richard had not prepared for.

Neither had Vanessa.

By evening she agreed to meet prosecutors.

Her lawyer negotiated.

Her cooperation would not erase what she had done.

But she would give them Victor.

The meeting took place at a secure federal building.

I did not attend.

I thought my role was finished.

I was wrong.

At 11:06 p.m., Daniel came to my door.

“Emma?”

“What happened?”

“Vanessa says there’s something only you can identify.”

“What?”

“The man at the kennel.”

“Victor?”

“She says it wasn’t Victor.”

I stared.

“But Anthony described him.”

“Same height. Same scar.”

“Then who?”

“That’s what we need to know.”

The next morning I reviewed photographs.

Ten men.

Then twenty.

Then thirty.

Nothing.

Finally Daniel showed me footage from the engagement dinner.

Guests.

Caterers.

Drivers.

Staff.

A man crossed the far edge of the service corridor.

Gray gloves.

My heart slammed.

“Him.”

Daniel paused.

The image was blurry.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

He enhanced another camera angle.

The man turned.

Scar near his chin.

But he was not Victor Hale.

Daniel identified him.

Peter Vale.

Richard’s son.

Luca’s childhood friend.

Best man for the wedding.

And suddenly the betrayal was no longer coming from one generation.

It was coming from two.
