Chapter 11 - The Maid She Tried to Silence

When Luca came home from speaking with Peter, he found me in the kitchen.

My mother was asleep upstairs.

Bruno was snoring beneath the table.

“Emma.”

I looked up.

Something in his voice worried me.

“What?”

“Peter mentioned your mother.”

I froze.

Not because I knew why.

Because I didn’t.

“What did he say?”

“He told me to ask her why your name appears in North Lake files.”

I laughed nervously.

“That makes no sense.”

“I agree.”

But neither of us believed coincidences anymore.

We woke my mother gently.

When Luca explained, her face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Mom?”

She looked at me.

“I should have told you.”

My stomach dropped.

“Told me what?”

Years before I was born, my mother worked as an administrative assistant.

For Moretti Industries.

My mouth fell open.

“You never told me that.”

“It was another lifetime.”

She worked under Isabella Moretti.

Luca’s mother.

Luca stared.

“You knew my mother?”

My mom smiled sadly.

“She was one of the best women I ever knew.”

I sat down.

Nothing made sense.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because of how I left.”

During the Charles Hale scandal, my mother had copied documents for Isabella.

She helped preserve records Hale wanted destroyed.

After Charles was removed, my mother began receiving threats.

She quit.

Moved neighborhoods.

Changed jobs.

Years later she had me.

“I thought it was over.”

Luca sat opposite her.

“Did Richard know?”

“He suspected.”

“And Victor?”

“I never met Victor.”

My mother looked at me.

“When you got a job here, I almost told you to quit.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Isabella was gone. Charles was gone. I thought that history had died.”

History rarely dies.

It waits.

North Lake investigators had searched old records.

They found my mother’s name.

Then mine.

Vanessa’s threat about my mother’s hospital bills suddenly carried another layer.

Maybe Vanessa thought she was merely exploiting my financial vulnerability.

But Victor knew exactly who my mother was.

That was why I had been photographed long before Bruno disappeared.

I was not random collateral.

I was the daughter of a woman who had helped Isabella expose Charles Hale.

Two generations.

Same families.

Same secret.

Different house.

My mother reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“Dragging you into something before you were even born.”

“You didn’t.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“You helped someone do the right thing.”

Luca looked at her.

“So did Emma.”

My mother looked at me.

“What did you do?”

I smiled weakly.

“Argued about a dog.”

Luca almost smiled.

Then Daniel entered.

“We found Victor.”

Everyone stood.

“Where?”

“A motel near Milwaukee.”

“Arrested?”

“Not yet.”

Federal agents were moving.

Victor tried to run.

He made it three blocks.

By midnight, he was in custody.

Richard surrendered the next morning.

North Lake’s accounts were frozen.

The conspiracy that had grown quietly for years began collapsing in forty-eight hours.

But Vanessa still had one weapon left.

The public.

She released an edited recording.

In it, Luca appeared to threaten her.

The clip spread online.

Millions of views.

Headlines exploded.

MAFIA HEIR THREATENS FIANCÉE.

RUNAWAY BRIDE FEARED FOR HER LIFE.

THE MAID AT THE CENTER OF MORETTI SCANDAL.

My photograph appeared online.

Someone had taken it from an old employee profile.

Comments poured in.

Homewrecker.

Gold digger.

Liar.

Paid mistress.

My mother saw them.

She cried.

That hurt worse than reading them myself.

I packed a bag.

Luca found me.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“No.”

“I can’t stay here while people think—”

“Think what?”

“That I destroyed your relationship.”

“You exposed a crime.”

“They don’t know that.”

“They will.”

“When?”

He didn’t answer.

I zipped the bag.

“I need my life back.”

He stood between me and the door but did not touch me.

“Emma.”

“I’m not asking permission.”

“I know.”

“Then move.”

He did.

Immediately.

That made leaving harder.

At the doorway he said:

“You have never owed me your silence.”

I stopped.

“That includes staying.”

I turned.

He looked exhausted.

“If leaving this house makes you feel safe, leave.”

I swallowed.

“But I want you to know one thing.”

“What?”

“When the truth comes out, I will not allow your name to be erased from it.”

I didn’t understand.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa’s story depends on making you look small.”

His eyes held mine.

“And you were the bravest person in this house that night.”

I left anyway.

For eleven days, I did not return.

Then a video appeared online.

Not edited.

Not anonymous.

The full security footage from the rear kennel gate had been released by investigators after becoming part of a public filing.

It showed everything.

Vanessa ordering Bruno removed.

Me refusing.

Peter dragging Bruno toward the van.

Vanessa grabbing my uniform.

The fabric tearing.

Me falling.

Me getting back up.

Me following them.

Trying again.

The video ended with Vanessa pointing at me and shouting:

“One word, Emma, and your mother will pay for it.”

May you like

Within six hours, it had sixteen million views.

And the internet that had called me a liar suddenly wanted to know my name.
