Chapter 7 - The Camera Vanessa Forgot About

The hidden camera became the first mistake Vanessa could not explain away.

Her attorney called it unauthorized footage.

Daniel called it evidence.

Police called it interesting.

Luca called it betrayal.

I called it terrifying.

Victor Hale had spent eleven minutes inside Luca’s study that night.

Eleven minutes was enough to photograph confidential acquisition files, estate records and personal documents.

Vanessa stood beside him.

Helping.

“What were they looking for?” I asked.

Luca paused the footage.

Victor was photographing a locked cabinet.

“Information.”

“To steal money?”

“Maybe.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not only money.”

He enlarged one frame.

Victor held a file labeled CALDER PROJECT.

Luca’s face changed.

“What is that?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“A redevelopment deal.”

“Important?”

“Very.”

Moretti Capital was competing to purchase a struggling industrial property near the river.

If the deal became public too early, competitors could inflate the price.

Someone had leaked details two months ago.

Luca lost the acquisition.

At the time, nobody knew how.

Now they did.

Vanessa had been feeding Victor business intelligence.

But why?

Money.

It was always tempting to assume money.

Then Daniel traced a payment.

Victor had received $1.2 million after the Calder deal failed.

The payment did not come from Vanessa.

It came from North Lake Holdings.

The same company Anthony had invested stolen money into.

Someone was using Vanessa to weaken Luca from inside his own home.

And Vanessa, convinced she was using them to secure her future, had become part of something larger.

“Who owns North Lake?” I asked.

Daniel looked frustrated.

“Layers of shell corporations.”

Luca stared at the frozen video.

“Find the human being at the end.”

That afternoon, Bruno disappeared.

For six minutes.

It nearly caused a security emergency.

Then I found him in the old sunroom.

He had pushed open a half-latched door and crawled beneath a sofa.

I knelt.

“What are you doing?”

Bruno wagged his tail.

Something was beside him.

A leather envelope.

Dusty.

Old.

I pulled it out.

The envelope had Luca’s mother’s initials.

I.C.M.

“Luca?”

He came quickly.

When he saw the initials, he stopped.

“Where did you find that?”

“Under the sofa.”

He opened it carefully.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And a key.

The photographs showed Isabella Moretti with Bruno as a puppy.

Luca smiled.

Then he saw the letters.

His smile disappeared.

They were addressed to him.

Never sent.

My son,

If you are reading this, then either I finally found the courage to tell you the truth, or someone else found these after I was gone.

Luca stopped reading.

I stepped away.

“That’s private.”

“Stay.”

I hesitated.

He read on.

Years earlier, Isabella had discovered financial irregularities involving a Moretti business partner.

She had hidden copies of documents because she feared the partner would destroy them.

The name appeared halfway down the second page.

Charles Hale.

Victor’s father.

Daniel swore.

Luca stared at the page.

Charles Hale had been one of Luca’s father’s closest associates twenty years earlier.

He left the company after an internal dispute.

The official story said retirement.

Isabella’s letter suggested something darker.

Charles had diverted money.

When Isabella discovered it, she threatened to expose him.

Before she could, Luca’s father handled the matter privately.

Charles disappeared from the business world.

His son apparently had not forgotten.

“This is revenge,” Daniel said.

Luca looked toward the hidden-camera still.

“No.”

He folded the letter.

“It started as revenge.”

“What is it now?”

“Acquisition.”

North Lake had been buying property around Moretti facilities.

Victor wasn’t only damaging Luca.

He was preparing to profit from the damage.

Vanessa had given him access.

Bruno had accidentally uncovered the jewelry theft.

She removed Bruno because he wandered everywhere.

But Vanessa might not have known the larger truth.

Victor had been using her too.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I opened the message.

A photograph appeared.

My mother leaving the Moretti estate the previous morning with security.

Below it:

YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT SERVING DINNER.

My breath stopped.

Luca took the phone.

Another message arrived.

THE DOG GOT A SECOND CHANCE.

YOU WON’T.

Daniel immediately moved toward the door.

Luca’s face became cold.

“Lock the estate.”

Then he looked at me.

“Emma, from now on you don’t go anywhere alone.”

I stared at the photograph.

Vanessa had threatened my job.

May you like

Victor was threatening my life.

And somehow I had gone from invisible maid to the one witness both of them desperately needed silent.
