Chapter 12 - The Daughter They Couldn’t Find

Lena uploaded copies of the motel evidence from three separate locations.
Evelyn sent them to federal prosecutors.
Nolan contacted investigators outside his county.
Carlos released Vale's messages.
The network began collapsing.
Arrests started before sunset.
Accountants talked.
Drivers talked.
Former employees talked.
Men who had remained silent for twenty years suddenly discovered memories.
But Vale disappeared.
So did Daniel.
Again.
Lena refused to accept it.
“He wouldn't leave.”
Jack wasn't certain.
Then Lena received a video.
Daniel sat tied to a chair.
Vale stood behind him.
“Bring the drive,” Vale said. “Or this time your father really does die.”
A location appeared.
An abandoned Bellhaven textile mill.
Jack said, “Trap.”
“Obviously.”
“You're not going.”
“Obviously I am.”
Nolan objected.
Evelyn objected.
Everyone objected.
Lena listened.
Then ignored them.
But she wasn't going alone.
They built a plan.
Vale wanted the original drive.
Lena would bring a copy.
Federal agents would surround the mill.
Nolan would coordinate.
Jack would stay near Lena.
For once, nobody kept secrets.
That was their advantage.
At midnight Lena entered the mill.
Vale waited.
Daniel was tied beneath an overhead light.
His face was bruised.
“Lena, leave!”
Vale smiled.
“Families. Always so dramatic.”
Lena held up the drive.
“Let him go.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Vale sighed.
“You have your father's stubbornness.”
“And my mother's patience.”
His expression changed.
Lena realized he remembered Claire.
Good.
“She beat you,” Lena said.
Vale laughed.
“Your mother spent seventeen years terrified.”
“No. She spent seventeen years making sure that if you ever came back, you would lose.”
Vale's smile faded.
“She hid evidence everywhere. She made copies. She left instructions. You thought my father was your enemy.”
Lena stepped closer.
“My mother buried you seventeen years ago. We're just closing the grave.”
Vale raised his gun.
Jack appeared from the shadows.
So did federal agents.
“Drop it!”
Vale grabbed Daniel.
Gunfire erupted.
A light shattered.
Darkness.
Lena fell behind machinery.
Someone screamed.
Then silence.
Emergency lights came on.
Daniel lay on the floor.
Blood covered his shirt.
May you like
“Dad!”
Lena ran.
