Chapter 16 - The Last Lie

Vale was arrested.
But one problem remained.
The ledger wasn't under the counter.
Daniel had lied.
Again.
Lena confronted him.
He looked ashamed.
“I needed Vale to believe it was.”
“Where is it?”
Daniel smiled.
“You really want to know?”
“Yes.”
“You're holding it.”
Lena looked down.
Her coffee pot.
The black handle contained a hollow compartment.
Inside was a microfilm copy of the original ledger.
Lena stared at her father.
“You hid criminal evidence in a coffee pot?”
“Your mother did.”
Lena began laughing.
She laughed until tears came.
Of course Claire had chosen something ordinary.
Something nobody noticed.
Something that moved through the diner every day.
The final evidence went to prosecutors.
Vale was denied bail.
His remaining organization fractured.
The nightmare was ending.
But healing was only beginning.
Daniel moved into a small apartment near Lena.
Not her house.
She wasn't ready for that.
They started with breakfast.
Then walks.
Then uncomfortable conversations.
Daniel answered every question.
Even the painful ones.
Especially those.
Lena learned that forgiveness wasn't a door.
May you like
It was a road.
And sometimes you walked only a few feet at a time.
