Chapter 18 - The Man at the Door

Six months later, Gideon Vale pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges rather than face a public trial containing decades of testimony.

Lena did not attend the hearing.

She had spent enough of her life letting Vale decide where she should be.

Instead she reopened the diner after renovations.

Carlos became assistant manager.

Mateo started college.

Nolan retired.

Evelyn finally closed the case that had haunted her career.

Jack bought a small house outside town.

And Daniel?

Daniel learned how to be a father again.

Badly, at first.

He called too often.

Asked too many questions.

Tried to repair Lena's sink without permission and flooded her kitchen.

They argued.

They laughed.

They learned.

One evening Lena was closing the diner when the bell rang.

She turned.

A gray-haired man stood in the doorway.

For one instant, the old fear returned.

Then Daniel smiled.

“You closed?”

“Almost.”

“I was wondering if you wanted dinner.”

“You're asking a waitress to dinner after her shift?”

“I hear they're difficult to impress.”

“Very.”

He approached the counter.

Lena noticed Jack waiting outside.

Her father had friends now.

A home.

A life.

He no longer watched from across streets.

He entered through doors.

That mattered.

Daniel noticed the old photograph framed beside the register.

The picture of himself, Claire, and Jack beside the fishing boat.

He touched the frame.

“Your mother would've loved this place.”

“She did love this place.”

“I meant now.”

Lena looked at him.

“She would've loved you coming home.”

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I hope so.”

Lena took his hand.

“She would've been furious first.”

He laughed.

“That sounds more accurate.”

They turned off the lights together.

But before Lena locked the door, she looked once into the long mirror behind the counter.

Months earlier, it had shown her two strangers watching.

Now it reflected her father standing beside her.

For the first time, the mirror held no secrets.
