Chapter 17 - When the Diner Went Dark

Three months later, a storm knocked out power at Bellhaven Diner.
Lena lit candles.
Customers stayed.
Jack sat at his usual stool.
Carlos had returned to work part-time.
Nolan drank coffee near the window.
Daniel entered.
The room went quiet.
Many people in Bellhaven had learned the truth.
A dead man walking into the diner still required adjustment.
Daniel approached the counter.
Lena looked at him.
“Coffee?”
“Please.”
She poured.
He watched her.
“You look like your mother when you do that.”
Lena smiled.
“I'll take that as a compliment.”
“It was.”
Lightning flashed.
For a moment she remembered the fear.
The men in the mirror.
The gunfire.
The lies.
Then the lights returned.
People applauded.
Life resumed.
Daniel reached across the counter.
“I'm proud of you.”
Lena swallowed.
“I needed to hear that seventeen years ago.”
“I know.”
“But I'll take it now.”
Daniel smiled.
